In many of the project’s target locations - such as the informal settlements of Nairobi –  a lack of soap and hand-washing facilities, cultural factors, such as people using ash or soil for hand-washing and a reluctance to talk openly about sanitation issues, can prevent people from protecting their health.

This is where local media can help. ±«Óãtv Media Action is working with trusted local FM radio stations to produce public service announcements (PSAs), short radio spots to promote hand-washing with soap before eating or boiling drinking water to avoid illness. We also train mentors to work with these radio stations to develop sustainable, compelling and memorable radio programmes that engage listeners in good hygiene practice.

±«Óãtv Media Action has also established a Technical Advisory Group to provide support and guidance to the project. The group includes representatives from partner organisations and local radio station partners. The group meets regularly to provide a forum for members to learn from each other and exchange information on the best methods of communicating about hygiene promotion.
