How media and communication are helping to tackle malaria in Sierra Leone

Our research shows how media and communication can contribute to better malaria control and stronger take-up of health services among listeners in Sierra Leone.

Publication date: February 2021

Authors: Mariama Deen-Swarray and Karen O’Connor

From October 2017 to February 2021, ±«Óătv Media Action ran a Communication for Healthy Behaviours, Achieving Reduced Malaria (CHARM) project funded by Comic Relief to contribute to better malaria control and increased demand for health services in Sierra Leone. This project primarily targeted women of childbearing age, their partners and other influential caregivers (such as grandmothers and aunts).

Through a series of examples, this report shows how the project’s formative research informed its media content. Findings suggest that the project’s programmes and PSAs have been effective in reinforcing positive knowledge, attitudes and behaviour to help prevent, test and treat malaria in Sierra Leone.

This evaluation also highlights continued challenges and recommendations for further interventions focused on malaria in Sierra Leone.
