By Ann Young
People say Liverpool has more comics per square inch than any other city. But how many of them are household names? Take a look at the Merseyside legends who make it into our comedians hall of fame.

Lily Savage

You can’t mention comedy and Liverpool in the same breath without thinking of Ken Dodd. The self styled squire of Knotty Ash and his tickling stick are still bouncing round the city after centuries on the comedy circuit. Best known for his epic gigs, pensioners can still be found wandering the streets after missing their last bus home, and Mr Dodd shows no sign of letting up.

Lily Savage, another Merseyside great, has left behind the world of womanhood and ‘come out’ as Birkenhead born Paul O’Grady. After hanging up his wig, and the obligatory “an audience with”, Paul took on comedy couple Richard and Judy in a head to head chat show war. He lost.

Ricky Tomlinson

Unofficial Mersey comic Ricky Tomlinson, of Royle family fame, can always be relied on for a gag as he continues to act as unofficial ambassador for the capital of culture.

Doing his bit for race relations and the world in one city,Ìę Stan Boardman is eeking out his comedy career with his unique brand of ‘old style’ humour which doesn't get him invited to as many dinners as it used to.

Gap toothed comedian Jimmy Tarbuck will always be one of the nation’s favourites. He is still wheeled out for various variety performances, although the best known thing about him these days is his scarily similar daughter Liza.

Most theatres in the city have played host at one time or another to the forever young Pauline Daniels, the dame of Liverpool comedy who can still pack them in.

And not forgetting Bootle boy Tom O’Connor. He has white hair and has been around for a very long time. He got involved in quiz shows for a bit, and people still pay good money to see him.
