INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION This website is a good guide to the notable figures and events in Scottish Industry during the period known as the Industrial Revolution.You can find out about the working conditions for people of all ages,plus there’s a feature on James Watt of the steam engine and later Scottish inventors such as Alexander Graham Bell and Sir Alexander Fleming.

HIGHLAND CLEARANCES
This website explains the forced evictions of Scottish highland and island residents. You can find poems, illustrations and history,plus there are articles demonstrating the attitudes of present-day establishments and clan societies on this controversial event in Scottish history.

NEW LANARK
This website will provide you with a history of the area known as New Lanark, once one of the largest cotton-manufacturing centres in the country, with it’s cotton mills powered by local water from the Clyde. This website complements the working museum that is now housed in the original buildings and will provide a good guide to anyone planning a visit to the area.

SCOTTISH ENLIGHTENMENT
This in-depth website provides a good guide to the people and events of the Scottish Enlightenment period. You can also find out more about the parallel events in France and the influence that some economists believed Scotland had on the French. There’s also features on Post-Enlightenment Scottish Economists and thinkers

EUROPEAN ENLIGHTENMENT
Washington State University runs this extensive site on the European Enlightenment.Covering the historical background, events and people relevant to the period. There are features on the most prominent writers and thinkers of the time including René Descartes, Blaine Pascal and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Each feature contains good illustration, but in addition there is a separate gallery with a more in-depth visual resources. For anyone new to the subject there’s also helpful glossary of enlightenment terms and concepts.
