Concert Information

Conductor Rumon Gamba joins the orchestra for a live ±«Óãtv Radio 3 broadcast of English tone-poems.

Opening with Frederic Hymen Cowen’s romantic Reverie, we also hear a piece from Manchester-born Eric Fogg – whose Merok paints a musical picture of a small Norwegian town.

Mêlée Fantasque – a colourful work from Arthur Bliss - is dedicated to the memory of Claude Lovat Fraser who Bliss described as a ‘great and lovable artist’. Bliss balances colourful passages – inspired by many of Lovat Fraser’s paintings – with elegiac undertones that hint of loss and grief.

Perhaps most known as a conductor rather than a composer – Eugene Goossens’s short but haunting By The Tarn puts his composition skills at the forefront today, and we also hear a previously little-known early work by Vaughan Williams - the atmospheric Harnham Down.

This afternoon’s programme also includes Dorothy Howell’s debut orchestral work, Lamia. which Sir Henry Wood premiered at the ±«Óãtv Proms in 1919 - and Arnell’s Symphony No. 3, The New Age - Overture.
