鈥淲hat came to still that mighty voice, whose song was so great and graceful?鈥� No artist works in isolation, and Sibelius鈥檚 struggle to tell Finland鈥檚 stories opened a path for a generation of his compatriots. The 鲍鱼tv Singers perform radiant, intensely romantic partsongs by two of Sibelius鈥檚 most gifted pupils, as well as Sibelius鈥檚 own, sensuous Rakastava (The Lover), and we hear readings of Sibelius's poetry.

It鈥檚 a world of changing seasons, of glowing landscapes and 鈥� burning beneath the music鈥檚 lush textures and radiant harmonies 鈥� an unmistakable passion. Toivo Kuula died tragically young, just months after Finland won its independence; Madetoja went on to follow in Sibelius鈥檚 footsteps as a symphonist. But their choral music, like Sibelius鈥檚 own, finds them making music for (and with) their fellow-Finns: and speaking straight from the heart.
