The transatlantic relationship between France and the USA has rarely seemed as friendly as it does in Ravel’s Piano Concerto, a note-perfect mix of Jazz Age energy and classical European grace. Two years after their recording won immense acclaim, pianist Steven Osborne and conductor Ludovic Morlot reunite to perform it tonight. It’s preceded by Darius Milhaud’s crackpot ballet, which gleefully knits together 30-odd Brazilian folk melodies, and followed by Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony, composed in the shadow of the Second World War but described by its composer as ‘a hymn to free and happy man’.
