But Holst's masterpiece is a lot more than just great tunes - it's a voyage to the outer limits of the soul itself. Tonight, John Storgards takes the ±«Óãtv Philharmonic to infinity and beyond, and follows two great northern composers on their own fantastic journeys.
John McCabe wrote Fire at Durilgai specially for the ±«Óãtv Phil; a stunningly beautiful vision of the Australian outback. Sir Harrison Birtwistle, meanwhile, was born in Accrington, and some say that he's Britain's greatest living composer. Judge for yourself, as trumpeter-extraordinaire HÃ¥kan Hardenberger toasts his 80th birthday.
