  Some years ago I came across a library book on the history of parachute warfare written by a member of the parachute regiment, he claimed the German army in WW2 had not developed the ability to drop a trooper with his rifle. The trooper dropped with side arm only and the rifles were dropped separately in containers.
  If this is true then the ±«Óãtv Guard units with their local knowledge of the ground stood a very good chance of getting to these German rifles first and putting them to good use. I wonder if any one else has come across this information and can confirm the authors statement as correct.

  I don´t believe that. One might imagine the invasion of Crete by German Parachuters first to sort out the right rifle out from a dropped box and then engaging into battle. They´d lost in such a way, but they succeeded.
