Some of us have frequented these boards (on and off in my case) over a number of years, but now the boards are closing.

So it is time to get all nostalgic and remind ourselves of some good threads, and interesting characters?

For me, Eric Brewster has to be the character who sticks out most in my memory. Claiming to be descended from all sorts of mythical and the great in history - he did have a good imaginiation!

And who was it that was adamant that King Offa didn't exist?

Eric and his Geneaological Superhighway was hilarious! He not only walked with the giants on this board but he also managed to became quite renowned on Family Trees, I don't think any other poster has quite managed that..........

There were also many memorable and amusing discussions with a certain Hildabloodaxe, who was of the belief that all Shakespeare's plays were historically accurate down to the last detail.

    Good days indeed.

I just heard what is happening! History gets downgraded once again?

I was a member here from 2005 and left, disillusioned a few years back, but popped back from my own History site (www.englistory.com) to say 'g'bye' to the Beeb History boards.

I remember Harold1066, who got his Uni degree and went off to S.America. Also many great debates about Brunanburh with Tim and others.

    Goodbye and all the best!

When I think back on the ±«Óãtv History board it is always John Heseltine I think of first. In the days when we had those responses to individuals which ended up away to the right, he and I often had a lot of fun. I have always thought it was saying nothing much, but have kept some of those exchanges and they have a lot more information (from him) than I remember. But the one thread I remember most was one which began with him mocking NZ for its cricket. (Some things would never change.)

We spent a few days in France with him and his lovely wife Eliane in 2007 with them taking us to mainly Norman historical sites round Caen.

I wasn't here early enough to remember an American (oh, and speaking of Americans, will anyone ever forget Buckskinz/Matt) called James something who drove people mad but then suddenly disappeared.

And I will always remember Nordmann's wonderful erudition, and Elistan's equally so. But there are dozens of people I will remember very fondly from here, many of whom turned up or frequented the bar. (They include you, Cass. And lovely Duncan (AA).)

    Cheers, Caro.

Oh God, how could I forget Buckskinz. If nothing else, he was very entertaining. And I always found his posts stimulating as it made you sit up and think about your point of view and try and argue it precisely.

    Hi Caro

I've since changed job so that email address is no longer valid and afraid that I lost your one.

I could tell you my email address by of course this being the ±«Óãtv they will soon get rid of the post. As the message boards are closing, perhaps the ±«Óãtv could turn a blind eye...? smiley - winkeye

Perhaps I could do it in code... Right, take my well-used nickname (beginning with the S...). Then add the AT sign, followed by the company beginning with y and rhyming with wahoo. Then add .co.uk at the end and then you have it.

Let's see how that goes. Fingers crossed!!

He left because he got himself banned (along with many other knowledgeable contributors) during the purge of Andrew Host, from which these boards never did fully recover. From the ±«Óãtv perspective, I'm sure Andrew did an admirable job in implementing the cleanup but from an historical and the contributer perspective, it was a disaster.

In remembering Buckskinz and his anti-British ranting on the Opium Trade I can't help but also remember DL and Rainbowfolly for their wonderful knowledge on Rome and the ancient world, Back to the Darkplace for his military knowlege, Nordmann and Mick Mack for their excellent expertise on Irish history and I'm sure there are more. But most of all I'll remember them for the humour that each bought to the boards, which made the learning experience here an enjoyable pleasure.

I'm relatively new and so I don't know or recall many characters as Brewster and Buckskinz (who sounds like the kind of guy I would have locked horns with!).

I have had the pleasure to have debated topics with members such as Theodosius and Nordmann, whose knowledge was incredible. Thanks to you both.
I leave this site the richer for having conversed with such people, and perhaps many others here whom I will never now have a chance to learn from also.

One such might have been Huscarl, whose debates here I missed, but I have been fortuitous to have gleaned his knowledge on topics after joining his own history website, Englistory.com.

It's that elusive combination of knowledge and humour that I'll miss most. I've often surprised the cat by spluttering helplessly, be it with laughter or indignation.
Can that be found elsewhere, I'd be very grateful to know?
I'm not sure how long I've been around, I think I found the board when ID was running the Historical Hysterical Taverna, of blessed memory. Starting to post was initially quite daunting but with everyone's help, I was soon feeling confident enough to venture in deeper and now I'm going to find it so hard to go cold turkey.

he was a "good ole texas boy" -had a few acres of land, a wood burner, plenty of guns, was anglophobic, and championed every action of the usa

turns out his mother was from yorkshire, his dad was jock and he was educated in the uk till he was twelve lol
    still sorely missed

anyone remember pegasuseddie = he was a lovely poster - bit like uriah heep - humble opinions

it turned out he was a sniper with the paras in ww2 - he sent me a link to his peoples war page - absolutely fantastic

he was 80 something then and suddenly disappeared - probably a sad ending :o(((

all in all though i think if the money saved on this board keeps Srictly going its all worth it lol

    Caro,

yes I remember pegasus eddy. And Plancenoit. I had very nice talks with him especially about the Leopold III contributor from Belgium.he was living in the time near Brussels and we exchanged also messages about the Belgian resistance during WWII. If you could bring him in contact with me again? You can reach me via message privé on Passion Histoire, Yiglu and the new forum I want to contribute to: Historum. They have also a private messageboard. But sadly I am registered and my name is already adverted on the board, but as I didn't receive an E-mail to validate I can't contribute yet. Hope it has as the old Smarts group nothing to do with my E-mail provider.

As for Eliane and John Heseltine. I have from time to time a phone call with her in Holland. And she says she is still fine and with John too. But she is now in full care of the disabled John. What a nice rememberance about his hobby connected with the English soldiers at Ypres WWI and with his Belgian friends the Diggers.

Kind regards and with esteem for all your messages during these years,

    Paul.

PS: What one all remembers. For instance about the French explorers of Louis XVI in Australia. Was that with Wollemi (Julie)? Caro, you learnt me also over the years about New Zealand, where I had only a vague knowledge from my child literature as from the explorer Bontekoe....

I have been on these boards on and off in various reincarnations for quite a few years now – I didn’t realise quite how long until people started mentioning the likes of Plancenoit, Miss Jean Brodie (aka Minette), and good ol’ Buckskins. Often I’ve just read through the discussions although I have been a bit more active since I re-registered this summer - which I did to take my mind of things after my partner died. These boards have been very good therapy I can tell you.

I think it's a shame that the boards are closing, but is no suprise. The traffic seemed to slow to a crawl and a lot of the more controversial posters such as Buckskins disappeared taking the debate with it.

So long IslandDawn,Paul Rykier,Anglo Norman ( and his trechebut) Urnangal,Caro,Priscilla,Cass,Nick, and many many others, thank you for some pleasant debate and some happy memories.

I can only assume he died suddenly, of an accident perhaps. It was rather odd; we never managed to contact him by email. It is disconcerting when that happens.

I remember him fondly - "DrkKtn". He wrote some amusing historical stuff, way back, on the Scottish board, but his posts attracted the attention of a "stalker" - a vituperative nationalist, who went in for coarse personal insults. Perhaps because of an excess of this, the Scottish board was closed down - about five years ago.

Just looked it all up - memories! Was amazed to see I've been on these ±«Óãtv boards since 2004. Had a lot of fun; they helped me over a bad patch in my life, and I shall miss them.

Me too, Jak. I was for various reasons in a very dark place (not the coal shed) in the autumn of 2008, and getting involved in the Elizabeth of York thread helped me get myself back together. I don't want to list names, but I must say especial thanks to Minette and Andrew Spencer who got me interested in the whole Richard of Gloucester debate - got me interested in life again in fact!

    Yes, Richard III saved me!

Well, no - that's going a bit too far, but you know what I mean.

Right, enough of the embarrassing heavy stuff.

On a lighter note, I must mention - with tremendous *affection* - Minette's spelling. Such idiosyncrasies! Such carefree abandonment of the rules! My favourite Minette misspelling was Henry Tudor's gambol at Bosworth. I have ever since pictured the said Henry skipping merrily over Ambien Hill (or wherever the battle was fought) shouting, "I've won! I've won! Mummy will be so pleased - hurrah for me!"

Her insistence on spelling comma as coma was another Minette classic - we always refer here now to the Oxford coma!

Minette, don't have a huff - I am only teasing you - as I said, with *affection* . Hope you and Andrew will join the Englistory site. Life won't be the same without you two arguing.

With regard people's spelling idiosyncrasies I'm sure someone, I wish I could remember who, once put:

    Hi All

I'm a really new member (in comparison) but can only say how grateful I am to you all.

I have learnt so much and been utterly entertained by some excellent and knowledgeable minds.

Gwenrian was the the person who didn't believe in Offa and that particular thread was amazing but there have been many others.

As a complete amateur in all of this I would like to thank TP and Nordmann who steered me in the right directions many times and also to the countless others (who I know will forgive me if I do not mention them all because I would be devasted to miss anyone) who have shone a light into those corners that are difficult to see.

The facts that I have gleaned have been quite exceptional and the kindness and patience shown by people who have challenged my interpretations and speculations has made it a very enjoyable experience.

I hope that we will all meet again on the other boards mentioned and I am already discussing Boudica (who else at the moment?) with people on Englistory who have kindly welcomed me...... and no doubt everyone else.

I would also like to thank the ±«Óãtv for these boards in the first place without which my life would have been a lot poorer.

The only real sadness is whether we will be allowed to fire the trebuchet with whatever contents ever again........?

Farewell (hopefully for a short time only)......

VF, why not join us on the historum.com group? TA, have you joined yet? Some people have changed their names and I do get confused.

I can recommend the englistory board too, pretty much all of us are on that as well.

There where two different Brewster visits Viz. The last visit was possibly a couple of years ago and the time before that may have been as long as 4 or 5 yrs ago.

You could enquire on Family Trees, they may remember as Andrew sent EB over there to post his family stuff. I remember he frightened the living daylights out of the good ladies though, they are not likely to forget! I also remember digging up the link to the first time he appeared and posting it, so if you can find his last time here you will find the first time.

    Sorry I can't remember more.

I hope you are going to join us over on Historum and/or Englistory? The quiz and bar etc is continuing on Historum and 20 people from here are there already with hopefully more to come. There are also quite a few on Englistory. Please do come over.

I first joined when the ±«Óãtv brought out its list of the 100 greatest Britons in 2002. I can remember Minette when she was Miss Jean Brodie, John Heseltine (Hes) and James Walsh from Paraguay also a couple of fellow 'Anglo-Saxons' named after Edmund Ironside and Harold Godwinson.

Rather less frequent on the history pages since joinging the smarthgroups world history page.

I was also on the ±«Óãtv science pages before they got vastly reduced in the number of pages (fond memory of KTDykes with his excellent knowledge of Mamallian evolution and very polite) and also the religious pages. There were quite a ferocious debate on both following the tsunami.

I can also remember someone going around and visiting every ±«Óãtv page in turn to ask a question on each, would not take him long now.

    Tim

    Remarkable is an appropriate word!

I remember Eric would never believe that the name Brewster didn't have a grand origin, but actually means a female brewer. Reality wasn't important in his research.
