I have just rediscovered a version of a Russian folk song, which I originally had in a different version by the Red Army Ensemble conducted by Alexandrov.

Despite looking on the internet, I haven't been ableto find the Red Army version; however, this version, by Boris Gmirya, is there.

Can any of you Russian speakers tell me what it's about( I know it means "Rise Red Sun")?

Also, it ( the Red Army version) appeared in Red Monarch, a tv film from the '80s.

Apparently, it's just a folklore song. Nothing but the "red' sun rising from behind some hills and all that kind of stuff. In pre-revolutionary Russia the word 'krasnoye' (red), apart from color, was a synonym for beautiful. Even now, prekrasnoye (beautiful) is a derivative of krasnoye (red), quite obviously. In the original meaning, there were definitely no Bolshevik related connotations.

Interesting, Baz. Just checked out a few of these songs and can remember one called "Tachanka" in a rather slower and more stately version than those in your link.

Also another I occasionally whistle to myself - quite a rollicking little number - something about our guns shining in the sun: "Orudi na solntse svekaet" or something like that.

These are links to the second world war time songs (most performed by the army bands):
