Complaint
A viewer objected to the decision to interview Baroness Mone and her husband, Doug Barrowman, about their role in the sale of personal protective equipment (PPE) to the UK Government during the pandemic. The viewer suggested the interview amounted to “client journalismâ€. The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the ±«Óãtv’s editorial standards of impartiality.
Outcome
The ECU considered there was a clear public interest in conducting the first television interview with Baroness Mone and Mr Barrowman and questioning them about the contract between his company and the Government to supply PPE. The scope of the interview was restricted to some extent by legal considerations, but the ECU’s view was the interview was appropriately rigorous. Both guests were asked whether they declared their interests at the time, and to whom. The presenter sought answers about how much the couple were paid, how much profit they made, and how they were due to benefit in the long term from the money they received. The presenter also questioned both guests firmly about their previous denial of involvement to the press.
