Complaint

During the newspaper review, the newsreader made reference to pictures published of two suspects accused of killing 137 people in a mass shooting at a concert near Moscow and the allegation they had been tortured.  A viewer complained the allegation of torture was unfounded because one of the photographs was taken in a hospital and showed the suspect receiving medical care.  The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the ±«Óãtv’s editorial standards of accuracy.

Outcome

The purpose of the item was to provide information to listeners about stories in the newspapers, and the accuracy or otherwise of the newspaper story in question was immaterial to the ±«Óãtv’s own editorial standards – though the ECU noted the complainant’s interpretation of the picture was not shared by most informed observers.
