Complaint

During an interview about the conflict in Gaza a spokesman for the Israeli Government claimed Hamas had “beheaded children†in the attack of October 7. ÌýA viewer complained the presenter failed to challenge this assertion, which they considered inaccurate. Ìý

Outcome

The ECU agreed with the complainant that the claim was contentious and unproven but not that the interview breached ±«Óãtv standards. ÌýThe information was presented by an interested third party, not the ±«Óãtv, and unlikely to be taken as necessarily true. ÌýIt was not the main topic under discussion and, whilst the presenter might have challenged the guest on this particular point, the ECU did not believe viewers were likely to have been materially misled by the absence of such an intervention, given the known brutality of the Hamas attacks and the wide-ranging nature of the interview.
