Complaint

An item on the Prime Minister’s official visit to India described him as being “of Indian heritageâ€.  A listener took exception to this, on the basis that his family originated from an area which is now part of Pakistan.  The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the ±«Óãtv’s editorial standards of accuracy.

Outcome

The ECU noted that the Prime Minister’s grandfather came from an area which was part of British India at the time, and in any case considered that the designation of someone’s heritage is not an exact matter concerning birthplace but relates as much to a question of personal identity.  In the light of the Prime Ministers own remarks on the topic and of references to him in Indian newspapers during his visit as “India’s son-in-lawâ€, the ECU saw no grounds for considering the item’s description of him to be inaccurate.
