Complaint

A viewer complained remarks made by the then leader of the Reform party Richard Tice following the results of two by elections were not challenged and questioned why other parties were not given the same opportunity to comment.  The ECU considered whether the broadcast met the ±«Óãtv requirements for due impartiality.

Outcome

Mr Tice gave his view on the reason for his party’s strong showing in one of the seats, a performance a reporter referred to as “r±ð³¦´Ç°ù»å-²ú°ù±ð²¹°ì¾±²Ô²µâ€.  In the ECU’s view it was part of the reporter’s job to highlight points of interest or note and there was, on that basis, no obvious reason why other parties should necessarily have featured.  Viewers would understand Mr Tice was offering a personal political viewpoint.
