Self Help Africa

Radio 4 Appeal 13 May 2018

I heard your moving appeal on ±«Óãtv Radio 4. We have an allotment and grow as much of our own fruit and vegetables as possible, and knowing the difficulties we have, we were moved to send some help for smallholder farmers in Africa who are struggling to feed their families.

Self Help Africa is extremely grateful for the generous support provided by Radio 4 listeners who donated an incredible £22,803 to our appeal aimed at helping smallholder farmers in Ethiopia to gain access to improved seed and livestock for greater food and income security.

Self Help Africa works through agriculture to end hunger and poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. We provide families with the skills and knowledge that they need to grow more and earn more from their land. We currently work in eight African countries, supporting more than 300,000 rural poor households.  The funds raised by the appeal will be used to support a new project in Ethiopia that targets 600 smallholder farming households who are currently dependent on food aid through the government’s Social Protection programme. The project will adopt a phased approach to support these beneficiaries to become self-sufficient.

We will provide improved seeds to help them grow nutritious crops such as sweet potato and mung bean for household consumption, while encouraging them to regularly save small amounts in a local rural savings and credit cooperative towards the cost of productive assets such as small livestock (poultry and goats). We will then work with the farmers to develop their enterprise skills, enabling them to operate their farms as small businesses and earn a sustainable income.

Thank you for helping to create lasting change that will improve lives for generations.
