Room to Read

Radio 4 Appeal 6 Sep 2020

There are young boys and girls who crave an education to make a better life for themselves, their families, and their communities".

In 2020, a child growing up in a low-income community in Africa and Asia, saw their right to an education threatened like never before.  For millions of children, the pandemic spelled months away from their classrooms, with limited access to digital learning resources, and increased financial pressures to drop out of education.

We are incredibly grateful to the listeners of ±«Óãtv Radio 4, who generously raised £23,040 to support the work of Room to Read at this critical time.  These donations will allow Room to Read to support the education of 767 young children in low-income communities for an entire year.  Thanks to this support, education will now empower these children to become the next generation of doctors, nurses, scientists, or teachers, at a time when their community needs it the most.

In our ±«Óãtv Radio 4 appeal, comedian and long-time Room to Read supporter, Sindhu Vee, showed the true impact of Room to Read’s work, through the inspiring story of Sapana.

Sapana grew up in a low-income community in Nepal where school drop out rates remain high, particularly for girls. Yet with the support of Room to Read, Sapana went on to receive an education, attend college, and is today a nurse bravely helping to save lives during the pandemic in the community she grew up in.

During a video call with Sindhu Vee, Sapana encapsulated the power of education: “Education has not only helped me dream, but also achieve my dream”.

Sapana’s story is a beacon of hope in these difficult times, however many children are not so lucky to receive the support she did.

Today, over 700 million people are illiterate, two thirds of which are girls and women.  Room to Read is on a mission to make this a reality, and free the world of illiteracy and gender inequality, allowing communities to build back stronger than ever before.
