Prisoners Abroad

Radio 4 Appeal 29 July 2018

I have been able to eat proper food instead of having to survive on nutrition-less rations. The vitamins have kept me free from illness and disease. I have bad depression and an anxiety disorder yet have survived well over two years.

NRG Prisoner in the Philippines

With this appeal we hoped to raise awareness of the frightening and traumatic situations that people imprisoned abroad and their families face.

Thanks to the generosity of Radio 4 listeners we raised an initial £34,351 which then became an amazing £68,702 as an anonymous family trust promised to match fund all raised donations.  It was fantastic that we had the Radio 4 appeal to inspire this generous act.

This will have a huge impact on people imprisoned around the world and their families.

This money enabled us to replenish our Survival Grant Fund and guaranteed we have the provisions and capacity to provide life-saving aid to people in prisons where conditions are squalid and malnutrition is rife.  It also enabled us to respond to urgent medical emergencies like Jon’s, featured in our appeal, who contracted tuberculosis in prison in Thailand and who without the support of Prisoners Abroad would not have received any medical care.  We support 172 people across Asia with Medical Grants and Vitamin grants and this money has made a huge impact on our ability to respond to our most vulnerable service-user’s needs.

We would like to thank everybody who donated for providing life-saving help to those who are so often forgotten
