Practical Action

Radio 4 Appeal 24 Jan 2021

I myself go to farms and suggest the right varieties of seeds to sow,” said Dammar. “Practical Action helped me with understanding the farmers’ issues and responding to them. The farmers take seeds from my agro-vet. They can also learn technical know-how here. The business is faring well and my sales’ volume is increasing.”

The impact of our appeal has stretched beyond the very generous donations we received. We have welcomed new members to Shine and were moved by some of personal stories behind the donations.

Farmers from Bajura, one of the poorest districts in far-western Nepal, struggle to produce enough food to feed their families. Remoteness, poor infrastructure and erratic rainfall has aggravated the situation, forcing most men to migrate to India for seasonal work. But there is an alternative, and while others from his district migrate seasonally to India for work, Dammar Saud has learnt new skills. With Practical Action’s support, he has started his own agro-vet shop selling seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, vet medicines and agriculture equipment to smallholder farmers.

Practical Action supports smallholder farmers by introducing a mix of new technologies and skills, through to commercialising agriculture to help them adapt to climate change and improve their livelihoods. Working with communities, Practical Action has implemented simple and smart technologies like solar-powered irrigation to improve the productivity and gravity-powered cable cars to get produce to markets in no time. Whilst farmers have learnt new farming technologies and business skills, nearby vegetable collection centres have enabled them to sell their produce at a stable price. Meanwhile, they can buy the agricultural inputs and learn about farming techniques from agro-vets like Dammar.

Thanks to our ±«Óãtv Radio 4 Appeal, broadcast in January 2021, we raised more than £38,868. Donations made to the appeal will be matched pound for pound by the UK government.

The money we raised through the generosity of Radio 4 listeners will support Practical Action’s work with farming communities around the world. Donations matched by the UK government will be used to help hardworking farmers in Nepal to turn the tables on climate change through an ingenious combination of solutions – everything from climate-hardy seeds, solar-powered irrigation and practical training to gravity-powered cable cars and women’s empowerment, which will help them adapt to climate change and improve their incomes and livelihoods.
