Child Rescue Nepal

Radio 4 Appeal 23 Aug 2020

Radio 4’s listeners gave very generously to our appeal in August 2020, helping us to raise an incredible £60,700. Child Rescue Nepal frees children from slavery and keeps them safe. This means going into building sites, factories and hotel kitchens with the police and physically removing them from danger.

In Nepal we estimate that there are over 100,000 children working in hazardous situations. These children are extremely vulnerable and suffer frequent physical and emotional abuse. Covid-19 and more recent inflation has increased the financial pressure on families, making children even more vulnerable to being trafficked.

Immediately after the appeal was broadcast, with your donations, we were able to rescue four boys and four girls from a garage, a factory and various hotels. And since then, we have gone on to rescue a further 18 boys and four girls including three Nepali children who were repatriated from India. The majority of these children are safely back with their families and have re-enrolled at their local school. If it is unsafe for a child to go home, we will care for them in one of our small family-style homes for as long as necessary.

The photo above is of Sanjay, the boy who was featured in our Radio 4 Appeal. Here he is with his houseparent, Dinesh. Sanjay is still in our care as his family are in a fragile situation and re-trafficking would be likely. However, we are optimistic that with the appropriate support in place, he will be reunited with his parents soon.
