ChildHope UK

Radio 4 Appeal 21 January 2018

She was hard to spot at first, so closely did she resemble the rubbish around her, only when she moved did I realise it was a child.

Bill Nighy

ChildHope has been blown away by the support we received for our recent ±«Óãtv Appeal. The generosity of over 1,000 Radio 4 listeners meant a total of £68,186 has been raised – thank you!

In our appeal, Bill Nighy shared the story of Grace, who was forced to work on a dumpsite in Nairobi to survive. Her experience is all-too-common for children living in poverty worldwide.

It is hard to imagine the conditions that some children are forced to live in. A photograph cannot convey the smell of rotting waste, the sting in your eyes from the smoke and fumes, and the sense of threat from the physical environment, people and animals on a dumpsite. Our projects are able to offer a place of calm, safety and opportunity for children to learn, play and thrive. Bill brilliantly conveyed his personal response to the shock of the dumpsite, contrasted with the ‘oasis’ created by the team in Kenya.

Jill Healey, Executive Director ChildHope

Last year our projects reached 64,000 children worldwide. Children like Grace who are living in desperately poor communities who have known nothing but life on the streets. Many of whom are at high risk of being abused, sexually exploited or forced into early marriage.

The money raised from this appeal will go towards our work supporting vulnerable children back into education, helping parents improve their income so they can better care for their families and working with communities to strengthen child protection and prevent violence and abuse in the future.

Thank you so much to everyone who donated, your donations enable children living in the most shocking conditions to turn their lives around.
