Anti-Slavery International

Radio 4 Appeal 5 November 2017

My employer didn’t treat me well and just insulted me with no reason. One mistake, ten insults.

Mary

In rural Tanzania, poverty and hardship forces children to migrate to cities to find jobs in private households. Far from their families they are vulnerable to exploitation, abuse and slavery.

The funds raised by ±«Óãtv Radio 4 listeners allow us to identify and provide holistic support to child domestic workers who fall victim of exploitation and abuse.

We reunite younger children with their families or find alternative arrangements in the best interests of the child. If older young people choose to continue working, we ensure they can do so in safe conditions. We provide a safe space for children where they can learn about their rights, build their confidence and attend educational classes.

We also work with employers to change their attitudes towards their workers, for example 319 child domestic workers received written and fair contracts last year, a vital step to a safe and secure environment.

We raise awareness and advocate for establishing local by-laws, something that provided excellent results in the past as entire communities change their attitudes towards children in domestic work.

By the end of 2017 we identified, registered and provided support to almost 2,500 child domestic workers in the Mwanza region of Tanzania.

Mary, who benefitted from our project, said: “When I started as a domestic worker, the situation was really bad. I could wake up dawn at around 5:30am daily and didn’t finish until 10pm.

As a result of intervention [of Anti-Slavery and partners] I can see a lot of changes in my life and my work. I now know my rights, and I was able to demand a contract of employment.

I would love to be an entrepreneur and I have a plan of becoming a great business woman in future, designing clothes and become a model.”

Your support helps us to shape a better future for Tanzanian children. Thank you
