Radio 4 Appeal 7 May 2017

Time to relax, have a change of environment and recharge batteries for the return to daily life.

The generosity of the Radio 4 listeners in 2017 has raised £12,155 which has helped families have a break away from the daily challenges that come from living with disability.

The 3H grant programme affords those whose lives are more difficult to take time for themselves and experience a break that gives them time to relax, have a change of environment and recharge batteries for the return to daily life. A fundamental truth is that disability and caring for a disabled loved one can present issues of isolation, depression, exhaustion, anxiety and financial worries to name but a few. Time away offers an opportunity to gain perspective allowing families to see past their difficulties once again.

MB's parents separated when her mother became disabled.  She became her mother's carer at 10 year's old.  Her father suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and she now provides practical, physical and emotional support to both and has done for over 13 years. MB has never been on a week's holiday without her mother or father since she became a young carer and her own emotional wellbeing has suffered.  She was able to take a friend to the seaside for a week and in her own words "feels rested, relaxed, refreshed and more positive on returning".
