South African strikes and violence in Gaza
Hi everyone, hope you are all keeping well, Anita Rani here. I thoroughly enjoyed my first show doing WHYS yesterday, so I'm back for another go. Today should be a thoroughly interesting listen, as it is everyday, but today we are making three global stops with the stories we're looking at.
To South Africa, Gaza and Mbemi, a village in Cameroon....
South Africa
About 1 million teachers, nurses and other civil servants have been on strike since June 1. The public sector unions rejected the government's latest offer Tuesday to boost salaries by 7.25 percent, up from an original offer of 6 percent. The unions are demanding a 10 percent increase, down from 12 percent initially. But while this is happening people requiring medical attention are not receiving it. Today we'll be getting reaction from the ground and the people affected.
Gaza
Gaza slid further into civil war today. Gunmen from Hamas and Fatah continue to attack each other and eight more fighters have been killed, raising the death toll to 55 in four days. But how are the civilians caught up in the situation managing to cope and continue to try and live a relatively normal life, if this is possible at all. What are their feelings and thoughts on the situation in the Palestinian Territories.
Female Genital Mutilation
We'll be talking to Cyril Ebie a Cameroonian, who saved his younger sister from female circumcision by running away with her to the nearest town for nine months. In so doing Cyril managed to convince his entire village Mbemi, that Female Genital Mutilation should not be practiced. Cyril won the ±«Óãtv Outlook Stand up for your rights competition. We will be speaking to Cyril on the show, he will be sharing his remarkable story.
