Leyla in London

Ros Atkins Ros Atkins | 11:33 UK time, Thursday, 4 January 2007

I'm the appointed Youth Outreach Worker for the African Well Women's Service in Leytonstone, London. As part of my role, I have made links with many organisations working with young people such as youth groups, local Somali football teams and non-African youth groups.

In July 2006 I was contacted by WHYS due to A comment that I've made on their Blog. The topic that I was invited to talk about was Somali communities in the UK and from there I've taken part in discussions which have included Somali's affairs, Islam and youths.

I have to say this one great radio show that I've enjoyed immensely specially topics on Islam where in 2006 that all local people and politicians talked about .

I have been awarded the Ambassador for Peace Prize by the Inter-religious and International Peace Federation. Ambassadors for Peace are individuals who dedicate themselves to promoting universal moral values, strong family life, inter-religious cooperation, international harmony, renewal of the United Nations, responsible mass media, and the establishment of a global culture of peace.

I also work closely with the Young Africans and Friends (YAF) group, formed by youth working together to tackle taboo issues within African communities, such as HIV/AIDS and female genital mutilation. They came together following the devastation of the London bombings, at a time when the Somali community was often spotlighted in the media at that time as potential terrorists. As young Somali people, they wanted to portray a more positive image of their culture and traditions to others.
