Mumbai? Bombay?
Interesting piece in .
This man makes a lot of noise. And he'll make it on PM tonight.
Nigel Wrench writes: "Dror Feiler is an Israeli-born, Swedish-based composer who believes noise can be music, and you'll hear some of what he produces on PM this evening.
Earplugs may be needed. The Bavarian Symphony Orchestra refused to play one of Mr Feiler's pieces in the spring. Orchestra members said they feared permanent damage to their hearing.
I met him in Huddersfield yesterday, inside the brand new creative arts building at the University of Huddersfield. Mr Feiler is performing at the annual contemporary music festival this evening.
It's an impressive building, designed by the Leeds architects Darnton Elgee. More .
The piece Mr Feiler is performing at Bates Mill in Huddersfield tonight is called Music is Castrated Noise (more on that and )
It is, not to put too fine a point on it, a cacophony.
I'll try to include some Beethoven and perhaps some Verdi in the radio item to sooth your nerves. The piece, as you'll have gathered, is still very much in the editing stages.
"If you dare to listen in a new way," says Mr Feiler, "then maybe tomorrow when you are in the street and you see things you don't like, then you say 'Is it really necessary that things are like this?'.""

Nils Blythe at Large....in Riga, Latvia.
Nils and property developer Viktors Savins from ARCO Real Estate at a new apartment complex outside Riga. House prices have been falling 6% each month having soared over the past few years. Viktors had to knock 35% off the price of these flats in order to sell them.
The somellier of Vincents restaurant, Raimonds Tomsons, choosing wine in the cellar. Restaurants and cafes are closing across Riga as people find the financial crisis beginning to bite. My guess is that Nils ate at Vincents but I cannot prove that.
Nils and Ivo Grubanov of Baltic Holidays in the main square in the Old town of Riga. Ivo's business has been hit by the weakness of the pound against the country's currency, the Lat.
Property developer Viktors Savins driving across the South Bridge in Riga. Recently opened, the bridge is reported to be the most expensive ever constructed in Europe as spiralling metal prices hit the development from the very start. You didn't get this from me but Nils is seriously thinking about buying property in the area. He loves the cold crisp air.
Ireland into the UK
army. Michael Buchanan has a report on the programme tonight. He writes:
"We'll be talking about a surprising side-effect of the peace process in Northern Ireland tonight - recruits from the Irish Republic are swelling the ranks of the British military.
Michael Godman from County Offaly wants to be a sniper with the Royal Irish Regiment. He says the image that many Irish people have of the British military - associated with its role in either the Republic's independence struggle or in Northern Ireland is history. And there is definitely a sense that the Republic is becoming more comfortable with the British military.
The funeral earlier this week of Robert McKibben from Westport, County Mayo - who was recently killed in Afghanistan - saw Royal Marine marching through his hometown -
something that wouldn't have been acceptable a few years ago. The respect shown at the funeral built on the opening of a memorial in nearby Castlebar last month to honour around 1500 people from County Mayo who died in several conflicts, mainly with the British. As one of the organisers of the memorial said we are not only honouring the dead, we are giving dignity to the living who can come here and now proudly tell their families that their ancestors fought and died for peace."

Would you like to be poet laureate?
Curiously, when I went into the ±«Óãtv's picture system and typed "Andrew Motion" - this chap was the first photo in the list. It's not Andrew Motion.
The reason we're mentioning Mr Motion is that, as , his decade as poet laureate is coming to an end. He has some advice for the new person in the linked article.
But I was wondering - if you have a song in your heart, why not pen a few lines about why YOU should be the next poet laureate? Better still, type them. Oh hang on I've found a photo.

in a bet with Briony, today's deputy editor. I'd said I was sure a certain politician would want to join us on PM tonight. She said he wouldn't.

The artist has had retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and at the Serpentine, London.
My photograph of him this morning will be exhibited nowhere but here. A film crew was about to interview him for a short film, commissioned by Tate, the gallery people.

Smiling actors, kitchen sinks, EastEnders.
Nigel Wrench writes: "This is the cast of a new play that opens at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh this evening, one that provokes the question: is this the right time for a new wave of kitchen sink drama?
Grinning at rehearsals in Edinburgh, actors John Wark, Ryan Fletcher, Susan Vidler, Carmen Pieraccini and Gary Lewis (is it just me or does Mr Lewis look uncannily like John McCain?).
The play is Nobody Will Ever Forgive Us written by Paul Higgins, best known as an actor and specifically for his role as a press officer in the TV series The Thick of It. I spoke to him for PM this evening and to the director John Tiffany who had such a success with Black Watch, also produced by the National Theatre of Scotland. You might have a thought about something that Mr Tiffany said: 'People think of kitchen sink drama as EastEnders. The thing about EastEnders is all it's done is take kitchen sink drama to new levels of mediocrity'."

A busy morning..
...we're working away on Saturday morning's iPM outside broadcast. Here's a clue:
Not a great clue but there you are. Yes, some poor listener who innocently contacted us, will have Jennifer and me invading her home before dawn on Saturday. If you're up early do try to catch us - not least because of a discussion we recorded yesterday with two listeners who could bring some personal experience to bear on the Baby P story. They were terrific and I hope you'll enjoy hearing it. It's our last week at 0545 for a while (we move to 1730 next week...back to 0545 in the New Year).
In other news, advent photos are already arriving - don't forget to send yours.
And as you may know our editor, Peter Rippon, is leaving after being fired. His "do" is tonight. There was a card going round the office which we lost. Twice. The drinks tonight will be in line with the new frugal ±«Óãtv, and it'll be rose wine - one glass only - created by mixing a bottle of red with a bottle of white.
It's true to say that PM would not be the programme it is without Peter.
Please don't hold it against him.

"What prompts me is the reported double standard between the perceived acceptability of paying for sex and having a female relative who is a sex worker. I'd like to hear that unpicked a little bit. Is there a parallel with the perception of violence against women (in which case, it's a question of respect not sexwork). Surely these women are women, just like any other; do we think that they are not so, and maybe even that sex taints women..."

Nigel Wrench writes: "This is Sibongile Khumalo, appearing the London Jazz Festival on Friday and on PM this evening.
Trained in opera in South Africa during the apartheid years, she turned to jazz because opera was generally only performed at state-run theatres, where a black woman in a leading opera part was unthinkable.
I snapped these pictures while she rehearsed with a band including Jack de Johnette, pictured here, widely thought to be one of the world's leading jazz drummers."

I've been doing some filming in the House of Lords this week for a ±«Óãtv Parliament programme about the 50th anniversary of Life Peers. The authorities will only let you in for filming between 7 and 9am - during which time the cleaners are also hard at work. Strange to see that ornate Pugin-designed gold throne on which the Queen will read the Queen's Speech next month, being flicked over with a feather duster.

Looks innocuous enough - but his grandson Bill Lamin says the issuing of thse forms would have told Harry that "some serious action was imminent". With just days to go before the end of the war, Harry's unit went back into battle...we'll have more on PM tonight about Harry and Bill.
