Surely the question is why an Australian-American is permitted to foist his obsessive anti-European views on so much of the British media. The fact that Murdoch's opinions count for more on pm and other radio programmes than those of the British people typifies the worst side of globalisation.
excellent programme, but is there a ban on mentioning drastic falls in the financial markets?

Strange to hear an eastern european, possibly polish accent, during the reading of the letters.
Strange because while it is not uncommon to hear Welsh, Irish or Scots accents, the only acceptable accent for people living in England is posh.
Can we assume that in future the the program will begin using actors with regional accents when reading the letters?
Thanks for the Alan Coren piece, like most Radio 4 listeners I found him a positive delight. He'll be sadly missed.
IS there a conspiracy of silence on the economic turmoil? I find nothing but the low-key report that the FTSE fell by 1½% and the DJI by almost 3% on the anniversary of the 1987 'crash'.
Are the meeja afraid of being accused of fuelling a panic?

Friday PM.......not impressed. What is impressive is how quickly the ±«Óãtv 'cut backs' have taken effect.

Hello All,
Many thanks for all your comments. Some of the stuff around yesterday was quite hard to develop. A couple of things didn't quite come up to scratch: we could have done a bit more explaining on the Treaty before looking ahead to its effects; and the rugby piece didn't deliver in the way the report from South Africa did on Thursday.
Ed (various postings), you may have a point about yesterday's falls... but I think it's a bit harsh to accuse us of deliberately ignoring market dips when they happen. We get accused of fuelling panic when we do report and then of we're accused of being afraid about causing panic when we don't report. Having said that, maybe I should have done something on the markets yesterday. On its own, yesterday's dip in the FTSE 100 didn't - in my judgement - merit a piece on the programme... only one and a quarter per cent, so not a big enough fall and no sign yet whether it is part of a trend. But I should have been more alert to the Dow, which had taken bigger hits. It was rallying just before we came on air, but my eye was on other problems so I spotted the subsequent fall back it too late.
Arthur McGiven (1) the debate about media ownership is re-opened with some regularity. Maybe it is is time to go there again. Press barons have always had influence on Government... and we cannot ignore the importance of papers like the Sun. It is always difficult to judge whether they lead or reflect public opinion... a bit of both perhaps. By reporting it, we place the not always obvious power of the owners in the public domain.
And DI Wyman (11), sorry to hear you don't like the programme. I can't pretend it was the best programme I've made... but then again, it wasn't the worst. If you elaborate, I'll try to give you a response. Or maybe you'd just rather let that last posting of yours stand as it is.

I know its not Sequins fault and I know it has been a bit of a bugger of a week for you guys....but hey...I have been there several times. Life goes on, and so does PM?
Please don't dwell on 'what is' so please 'out' and look for ear tingling, biting, lets get 'down to it' articles.......PM..... is my PM fix.

No complaints with your assessment, DIY. I've made better programmes... but I've made worse. Nothing at all to do with the ±«Óãtv cuts. Just a day when it didn't come together. They happen.

Thanks for your answer. Mine was more a cynical /ironic observation than a complaint, and I do understand your double bind, in fact that was my point.
The phenomenon was not restricted to PM or even the ±«Óãtv. I admit to schadenfreude as I watch the markets get ever further from reality. Like George Monbiot, I reckon our best hope lies in the collapse of The Global Market, a false diety if there ever was one. See my namelink.

Blimey Ed, you deserve a medal.
Could you please post some stuff about how ±«Óãtv pensions are linked to the markets and how the ±«Óãtv misreports the reputation of monetary authorities during crises in order to preseve stock values. One more push and you'll have Sawyer admitting it all.
Now the Beeb itself thinks it may have been instrumental in the Northern Rock affair it may be willing to calculate how much of the 18 or so percent the FTSE is overvalued by is due to ±«Óãtv dishonesty and self interest in over reporting gains and under reporting losses. (It makes people more willing to buy and hold on to shares).
Can Monbiot now expect regular abuse from Simon Worral, RJD, Witchiwoman and the other knee jerk hacks.
This post could seal your return to the fold, Ed. Check it with Fifi, but I think so. You may be mentioned in a Lying Scotsman lyric yet!

Ed, given the thread about cats being stolen and dumped I hope that 'no dead cats yet' goes on being true.

You may know it, but I'll explain anyway. When the eternal optimists note a 'bounce' in the market following a steep decline, the cynics reply that even a dead cat will bounce if dropped from high enough.
The wee 'bounce' this morning, barely managing to keep above Friday's close was a pretty pathetic attempt at a 'dead cat bounce' as these things have come to be known.
The charts I posted
semed to me to resemble some poor creature trying to keep its head above the waterline of Friday's close (red line). Seems to be going down for the third time, just now (20:19 BST) It may just manage to make it to closing with its nose above water, but....
I'm sorry if my cruel sense of humour pains any animal lovers, but there it is.
We may be cruel to animals, but we're very kind to bankers. See my namelink
