Hugh sends some more
pics - greatly enjoyed hearing his report as I was whisked to Lancaster last night on the ±«Óãtv Leer. Here's what Hugh had to say:
Lunar New Year's Eve here now - even more fireworks than Diwali in Mumbai (which almost everyone there still calls Bombay) Happy New Year of the Pig! Sin ye hau. Sin ye kwai luh.
The pics are of kind people I have met/interviewed (and an obligatory shot of the Forbidden City).
The man with the dog - I just asked to take his picture.
The boy with the sacks is waiting for a train at Nanjing - his Dad is somewhere nearby.
The smiley family asked me to take a picture of them, after I had said "Nee Hau baby!" as I passed by.
Sitting at his table in his very small home in Beijing is Chiang Shao Li, who invited me in after we met and chatted in the street. .

I hope you're all behaving yourself in my absence. Beijing sounds more how I imagine Baghdad might on a bad night right now - it's coming up to 8pm, and there are *hundreds* of fire-crackers going off all over the city, as we approach New Year at midnight. If it's this noisy now, what will it be like when midnight arrives?! I dread to think (in fact it'll probably be so loud, I won't be able to think) Zai zhen

Repeating myself here as I wanted to put this on the "most recent thread:
Since noone else has mentioned it I will -- today is six months exactly since the blog began! Are we having a party? I'll mention it on the beach too.
Regular froggers may be aware that my mother had some surgery on Wednesday. She is feeling fine, but we do know that she will soon need to have some radiotherapy. Yesterday she and I wholeheartedly agreed that Eric is the best therapy on the radio anywhere. Coincidentally, he crops up on extra programmes this weekend! He has clearly heard our plea:
"Eddie Mair to do all the radiotherapy please!"

Nee Hau Hugh - and thank you for those wonderful photos. What lovely, friendly people you have met. I love your contrapositioning of the man and the CocaCola sign! Marc tells us that firecrackers have been going off all round, so you must be feeling a bit deaf now.
I am definitiely going to take up Mandarin this year, but in the meantime I just hope you weren't saying anything rude to us when I repeat your own greeting to us:

Seriously, though, I really enjoyed your chairmanship today (for I was out last night), which augers well if the ±«Óãtv Board do the right thing by you (and us). I had to go out again this afternoon, so am saving up the delight of listening to you fending off the callers from AA this afternoon. I just hope you didn't get too many of the usual crowd (not that I'm sure you'll have handled them with your customary aplomb!) Were you able to keep a straight face? - I doubt it.
And just what is the ±«Óãtv Leer? From what I have gathered in the past, Mr. Dimbleby always travels by train.......
Big Sis - the ±«Óãtv Leer? Sounds like something all ±«Óãtv presenters have to learn to scare the punters with, as in a suggestive or sneering look or grin. Or maybe he just meant the airborn ±«Óãtv executive jet limo.......;-)

Great pictures Hugh - many thanks for posting them for us. I am quite sorry we won;t be hearing any more from you from China.
Having listened to AQ today I can't help feeling that that Labour Minister was a boor and a bully and actually Eddie you let him get away with too much, you allowed him to talk down several other membes of the panel on different occasions. I appreciate it's probably a difficult task to chair AQ with cheerfulness and good manners especially when one of the panel is showing neither of those things.
AA - I think that the Labour Minister didn't do himself or the Government any favours by his performance. I think your description of "boor" is spot on.
I'm sad to say that I don't even remember his name or what department he is Minister in. That in itself is probably very telling and very disappointing because I would naturally lean Labour.
Apologies by the way for the cropping of Hugh's pictures. At Broadcasting House, (the building, not the programme) the PC did not have the magic software on it that lets me fiddle with the sizes. Will adjust from the office tomorrow.

Could we send you round some of our inner cities here? I feel they are like a foreign country to many of us! You seem able to get people to tell you things that are quite revealing. Of course the expenses wouldn't be so good...

Annasee (11) what a good idea, he's so good at getting out there and meeting people! Did you hear his (and others') report on TWTW on corruption? Bribes to make sure your surgeon does a good job - scarey!
Also though BH (the prog not the building!) was v good this morning - interesting and detailed interview with the absent father of a lad convicted of a fatal shooting, and v well informed guests.
Still trying to get this message posted. Has anyone got any idea why it is always 'awaiting approval' or disapproved?

Oh dear, I rather think my previous posting will come through in triplicate (but, please, blame Room 502 - it misled me into thinking I hadn't 'made it')
I've listened to PM for years Big Sister, when I can. I think Eddie Mair is as good a presenter as it has had in many years, I'm not so sure that the Blog is all that it could be, but I suppose its irreverence mirrors PM somewhat.
As to Charlie's Angels, you will understand that this is not of my creation or indeed instigation. It would however be churlish to not acknowledge those who find my work of some value.
Charles: If this goes on much longer, I may feel compelled to join their ranks!
When I next watch 'Jewel', I shall see you in a new light. As to the Blog, the regular froggers are a pretty irreverent lot. I'm not sure it's what the ±«Óãtv intended, but if you throw a party at Eddie's expense, I imagine it's likely to get a bit out of hand. Blame the Lord Mair.
