Today’s output editor is Dan Kelly – here’s his morning e-mail to the production team.

Good morning.

Seven months after his first visit, Mark Urban returns to al-Doura with US 2nd Platoon. After "the surge" of troops in Baghdad the change in al-Doura has been dramatic. Mark goes on patrol, sees the sectarian peace walls, speaks to Sunnis and Shias, and considers whether the security gains brought by the surge policy can be sustained.

We have a film from Roger Harrabin about the per capita emissions of developed and developing world countries. We have a live interview with the Environment Secretary Hilary Benn, and we hope to have a wider discussion about the chances of success at the conference.

We need to keep an eye on Afghanistan, too...

Dear Newsnight

Might you be able to look at the idea of using prison to deter violence in crime, release all non violent offenders and find ways in the community for them to serve out the remainder of their sentences while imprisoning for life without parole, the vilest offenders including all rapists and child molesters.

Make it clear that if you harm another person as opposed to taking their money a criminal will expect to be imprisoned for a very long time and often never released.

Hence emptying our prisons while imprisoning the worst offenders for far longer than at present.

best wishes
Bob

There have been a couple of stories recently about changing the National Anthem and officially removing the verse which alledgedly offends us Scots. This verse has never actually bothered me as its never actually sung. What does offend me is when the the anthem is sung at inappropriate moments, usually before a sporting occaision involving an English National team. The inference being that Englishness and Britishness are synonomous and the Welsh, Scots and Northern Irish are just an older version of the Polish labourer, useful and tolerated but not really welcomed. Perhaps Newsnight can lead the way and find an English Anthem for events that English teams compete in and save the British Anthem for British teams. That would be a far greater gesture to the smaller nations in the union than simply removing an already redundant verse.

I think you may also need to keep your eyes on Gaza (major Israeli incursion) and cover the bombing
of UNHCR and the Constitutional Court in Algeria this morning?!

Unfortunately, Bob Goodall, since the year dot, English law has been more concerned with the protection of property rather than the protection of people.

Good idea, though.

I favour the ball and chain punishment, myself. Make minor offenders go around with a ball and chain for six months.
