What are 2D shapes?

A 2D or two-dimensional shape cannot be picked up. 2D shapes can be found printed in a book or on a website, or you can draw them on a piece of paper.

What are properties of 2D shapes?

2D shapes have sides and vertices.

A vertex is a point where two or more lines meet. The plural of vertex is vertices.

The number of sides and vertices are the properties of a shape.

Sides and vertices

Let's have a look at the sides and vertices on these shapes.

A triangle showing 3 sides and corners

A triangle has 3 sides and 3 vertices.

A square showing 4 sides and 4 vertices

The square has 4 sides and 4 vertices.

A hexagon showing 6 sides and 6 vertices

The hexagon has 6 sides and 6 vertices.

Remember

A 2D shape is a flat shape with sides, vertices and sometimes lines of symmetry.

If the sides and vertices on a shape are all the same, the shape is regular.
