What is Chinese paper cutting?

Chinese paper cuts ( Âá¾±¨£²Ô zh¨«) are used to decorate ( zhu¨¡ng sh¨¬) windows during the Chinese New Year ( Ch¨±n Ji¨¦).

They are usually red ( h¨®ng s¨¨ de) because the colour red symbolises happiness ( ku¨¤i l¨¨) and good luck ( h¨£o y¨´n).

How do you make Chinese paper cuts?

A4 card, safety scissors and coloured pens or pencils.

You will need:

  • a sheet of A4 thin card ( k¨£ pi¨¤n)
  • a pair of safety scissors ( Âá¾±¨£²Ô d¨¡o)
  • coloured pens ( shu¨« c¨£i b¨«) or pencils ( qi¨¡n b¨«)

Instructions:

  1. Print out ( d¨£ y¨¬n) the template onto an A4 sheet of thin card.

  2. Colour in the template - try adding in some red.

  3. Carefully cut ( Âá¾±¨£²Ô) along the dotted lines.
