Roles and responsibilities
- Working closely with teams based in Salford, London, Cardiff and Glasgow, as well as with our UK-wide Orchestras and Choirs, Sam leads the strategy for classical music across the ±«Óãtv
- As Controller of ±«Óãtv Radio 3, Sam drives creative and managerial responsibility for the running of Radio 3 and the delivery of the annual ±«Óãtv Proms (the world’s biggest classical music festival), making sure the network and the Proms remain at the forefront of cultural life in the UK and across the world
Biography
Sam has worked across broadcasting and the recorded music industry for nearly 20 years, collaborating with many of the world’s greatest classical and jazz musicians. During that time, he has held a range of senior leadership roles and prior to joining the ±«Óãtv was Executive Vice-President of Global Classics & Jazz for Universal Music Group.
Music education has been important to Sam throughout his career. He was a member of The Music Commission – a year-long inquiry into supporting and sustaining musical progression for all – and is a Board Member of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance. In addition, he is a trustee of the charities Help Musicians and the Young Classical Artists Trust, a member of the Royal Philharmonic Society Council, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music. He has also written and co-written a number of best-selling books on classical music.
Named by The Hospital Club as ‘one of the 100 most influential and innovative people working across arts, culture and the creative industries’, Sam’s first experience of broadcasting was as a 19-year-old runner at the ±«Óãtv Proms. After studying Music at the University of York, Sam then spent 15 years in the commercial radio industry, latter running three national radio brands: Classic FM, Smooth and Gold.

Expenses are costs incurred by ±«Óãtv staff on behalf of the ±«Óãtv and claimed through the ±«Óãtv's expenses system.
Central bookings are costs incurred on behalf of the ±«Óãtv and booked through the ±«Óãtv's central bookings system. Both expenses and central bookings are published every three months.

Declaration of personal interests
Staff must make a declaration of their personal and business interests, including any memberships or directorships of public or industry bodies, and any shareholdings, as well as any interests that their immediate families may also have.
A summary is published where there is something to declare and where there is nothing to declare. Occasionally an individual will have something to declare but due to the personal nature of the declaration we do not publish details as to do so would breach the General Data Protection Regulation.
